This night market is located just behind the Central Rama 9 shopping mall and is apparently where you can find the famous stalls from the now defunct Ratchada Train Night Market. My husband and I arrived around 5.30pm on a Monday evening after our massage and onsen experience at Let’s Relax Onsen & Spa and found that most stalls were already set up. It is a mid-sized market that took us about an hour to explore.

The atmosphere here was lively and bustling, though the walkways are fairly narrow and we needed to squeeze past people as it got increasingly crowded later in the evening. There are some seating areas scattered around but do note that there isn’t really much shelter. As such, if it is raining, advice from the locals is to change your plans and avoid visiting this market entirely as the paths here can get quite waterlogged.

There was lots of variety in the food section of the market. Many of the larger stalls with sit-down dining spaces were serving these huge pork ribs that people were eating directly with gloved hands. The dish looked a little daunting so we didn’t go for it. Instead, we wanted to have smaller bites to sample from a wider range of stalls.
The first one my husband wanted to try was the fried fishball stall. The fishballs (THB40) were fried on the spot so it came piping hot. This was an easy and yummy snack to munch on.

While perusing the rows of stalls, one of the stall owners stopped us to offer a vegan brownie sample, which tasted pretty good. I didn’t buy one though as I was looking to eat more savoury items at that point.

The next thing we tried was the grilled beef (THB25 per stick). It wasn’t as well-seasoned as I would’ve liked it to be but it was juicy and succulent in texture.

My husband then got himself a Thai iced milk tea (THB45) from a stall reminiscent of the Bear Bear Milk stall at Liab Duan Night Market. It was rather average but worked great as a thirst-quencher.

During our first walk-through of the market, my husband already took special note of this stall selling fried pork dumplings (THB30) so we ended up coming back and ordering a bunch to try. Unfortunately, the dumplings weren’t crispy and the portion of meat in each dumpling was a tad miserable. He also claimed that his stomach felt funny after eating this.

I was drawn to the stall selling grilled scallops with cheese (THB119 for 5 pieces) and other seafood options as I saw the owner torching the glorious cheese to melt it all over the scallops. Alas, when I took a bite of mine, the cheese and scallops tasted unexpectedly bland. In my opinion, it needed way more seasoning but at least the texture was decent.

Our last meal at the market was a plate of creamy omelette on rice with stir fried basil pork (THB75). We requested for the non-spicy version for my sake and the stall owners whipped it up on the spot. This was classic comfort food, simply delicious.

Now that our tummies were satisifed, we moved on to the shopping section of the market that covered a slightly smaller area than the food section. My husband bought two caps for himself, and we also picked out some funky tropical shirts as souvenirs for my dad. We felt that most of the items were decently priced, though you could still try your luck at haggling.

My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars. It was a nice market to explore with many tempting food options to try, but it was a hit and miss in terms of taste depending on which stalls we bought from. There were also stalls selling retail goods, though the variety wasn’t as wide given that it was a fairly small section. The spaces and seating areas were relatively clean and well-kept, which was great. However, when it got crowded later in the evening, it was difficult to walk comfortably along the narrow paths or find an available table to dine at. All in all, it is a market we don’t mind coming back to, but with the opening of the new Jodd Fairs DanNemarit at Phahonyothin Road, we might prioritize a visit to that one instead!
If this post helped you in some way and you’d like to buy me a coffee, I’d be incredibly grateful (:
