As someone who really loves night markets, this was the first thing I searched for on Google when planning for this weekend trip to Kuala Lumpur 😀 This market looked like a really vibrant place to visit based on the reviews online. It is accessibly located just a few minutes’ walk away from the Bukit Bintang train station and a 15-minute car ride from our accommodation at Four Seasons Hotel. Most, if not all, of the stalls here sell food (not so much for shopping) so come hungry!

When my husband and I arrived around 7.30pm on a Saturday night, the crowds were already starting to build up, though still not at its peak yet. By about 8pm, the paths were so jam-packed with people that there was barely any space to manoeuvre, so come early if want to avoid the squeeze. There are small stalls and larger sit-down restaurants on both sides and pretty lanterns hanging from above, adding to the bustling festive vibes.

We had a hard time deciding which restaurant to eat at since everything looked so good! In order to stave off our hunger in the meantime, we bought a pack of fried chicken skin (MYR10) to munch on while we walked around to peruse the various restaurant menus.

Eventually, we settled on Meng Kee Grill Fish restaurant. From the menu, we ordered the wok fried clams with ginger and garlic (MYR25+), Penang char kway teow (MYR10+), garlic kang kung (MYR10+), white rice and a cup of teh tarik (MYR3.50+). The food tasted quite okay but it wasn’t mind-blowingly delicious. The teh tarik was yummy though.
Halfway through our meal, we spotted fireworks going off in the distance! There was also a two-man band right beside where we were seated so we got to enjoy some live music along with our dinner (:

Once we paid for our meal and left the restaurant, the next thing I got was a freshly-squeezed sugarcane drink (MYR6). It was such a sweet and refreshing thirst-quencher.

We walked past a couple of smaller stalls selling coconut ice cream, which tempted us enough to finally stop and buy one for ourselves 😛 At this particular stall, they were selling 4 mini scoops for MYR12.90. I didn’t know we could order a mix of ice cream flavours until afterwards so we only got to try the coconut flavour, oh well.
In terms of taste, it was light and refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness. It also came with strips of coconut flesh and toasted coconut sprinkled on top, creating a nice medley of textures. I thought it was rather cute that they served it in a half-husk too.

My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars. This food street and market is definitely worth checking out because of the endless food choices and pretty affordable prices. We didn’t try the classic seafood dishes this time, like the crabs and prawns, but we saw many customers with their tables full of those so I guess those must be popular. If you want to avoid the massive crowds, it might be best to come earlier in the evening before 7.30pm. It got uncomfortably crowded at some points later at night but thankfully there were still exit points by the sides that we could walk out to just to catch a breather. All in all, a night well spent (:
If this post helped you in some way and you’d like to buy me a coffee, I’d be incredibly grateful (:
