Mid Valley Southkey is a relatively newer shopping mall that opened its doors in 2019 so my girlfriends and I were keen to check it out. While exploring the mall, we chanced upon this Mediterranean restaurant located on the ground floor and decided to have dinner here.

It had a lively sports bar atmosphere and was pretty bustling when we arrived. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available, but only the outdoor seats have an unobstructed view of the stage where live bands perform. After checking with one of the staff, we found out that the band that day only started at 10pm, which meant we would have to give their performance a miss since we weren’t planning to stay that long. As the night went on, the restaurant became more crowded so it was even less of an incentive to linger further.

On to the food! In general, we thought the mains were more memorable than the starters. We ordered the chicken pakora (spiced deep-fried mixed vegetables served with green chutney), fiery guacamole (smashed avocado, jalapeno, salsa, cilantro and fresh lime served with cajun-spiced pita chips) and flaming wings (sticky habanero glazed chicken wings with zesty lime). These weren’t bad per se but they functioned more like mediocre tummy-fillers that we probably could’ve done without.

Next up was the beef short ribs glazed with habanero sauce and parmesan polenta. Most of us liked this dish as the ribs were well-cooked, juicy and pulled off easily. However, it had quite a gamey smell so it certainly wasn’t my favourite.

Our fish dishes were the parmesan crusted salmon on a bed of saffron risotto and the halibut a la plancha (a 180gm fillet with vongole veloute and sauteed bell peppers). These were okay in terms of texture but they didn’t have very much flavour.

We unanimously agreed that the truffle pizza, made with black truffles, seasonal mushrooms and truffle oil, was the best dish of the night. It was savoury and fragrant, plus the dough had a slightly chewy texture for that extra bite.

The staff informed us that there was an ongoing happy hour promotion between 12pm to 8pm and proceeded to show us the menu. We found it really strange then that when we wanted to place our orders, we were told that most of the options were out of stock, a major bummer ):
We eventually settled for two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc and a cider mimosa (supposedly consisting of apple cider, orange juice, moonshine, lemon juice, strawberries and apples). The latter was very sweet but also overly alcoholic-tasting for me. One of my friends even commented that it tasted like icky cough syrup.

My overall rating of the experience: 3 out of 5 stars. The quality and standard of the food here was a mixed bag, where some dishes were delicious while others were just plain average. Not much of a dining ambience as well, as many customers were drinking and yelling across the tables, especially later at night. Also, service levels from the staff were perfunctory at best. On the whole, I’m pretty sure there are more appealing dining alternatives at Mid Valley Southkey to go to.
If this post helped you in some way and you’d like to buy me a coffee, I’d be incredibly grateful (:
