After our fifth and final escape room at Breakout located in NU Sentral shopping mall, my husband and I opted for convenience and decided to grab lunch in this mall. We did a Google search for what’s good to eat here and this restaurant came up!

Located right at the mall entrance where the drop-off point is, this restaurant felt bright and open, decked out in a fusion of both contemporary and traditional elements. It was really crowded on the day we visited so there weren’t many seats left to choose from, popular indeed.

We ordered a couple of items to try as the portion sizes were on the smaller side. First up were the salted egg and shredded chicken congee and golden fish crackers. Every mouth of the congee was so flavourful and fragrant from that drizzle of what appeared to be sesame oil, just the perfect comfort food.
The golden fish crackers are made of fish paste with cheese and salted egg yolk spread between cream crackers. This was simply divine – crispy, savoury and succulent all in the same bite ❤

Next was the siew mai dumplings made with chicken, mushroom and prawn. I was impressed by the sizeable chunks of prawn and tender chicken meat, but the only flaw was the unpleasantly hardened skin that held them together.

Then, we had the baked bolo butter coconut buns. I initially wanted the pandan gula melaka egg tart (which sounded like such a treat!) but sadly, they ran out of those so I picked this as a substitute. The crust on top was sweet and crispy while the bun was soft and buttery, but I guess I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should’ve because I’m not a fan of shredded coconut to begin with.

Lastly, we tried the signature egg custard buns and a mango pomelo dessert. The custard buns were warm and fluffy, oozing with smooth liquid custard that was just the right mix of sweetness and saltiness for me. Yum!
Alas, the mango pomelo turned out to be rather disappointing. According to the description, this dish comprises mango purée topped with plucked pomelo. However, there was no pomelo to be found in ours, which I felt could’ve really helped cut through the gloopy texture of the overly sweet purée. Certainly our least favourite dish of them all.

In terms of service, the staff were generally polite and professional but there was one in particular who made an impression. Seeing that I was taking photos of the restaurant, he gestured for me to enter a closed-off section with a pretty interior so I could have a closer look. He also suggested a nice vantage point to capture the beautiful curved entryway. Finally, while making payment, he earnestly asked us how we found the food, very friendly guy!

My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars. Easily accessible from the drop-off point of NU Sentral shopping mall, this restaurant has a bright and breezy ambience with a pleasing juxtaposition of modern and traditional Chinese elements. Most of the food we tried was delicious – our favourite was definitely the golden fish crackers! Unfortunately, the one dish we didn’t quite like was the mango pomelo dessert that was much too sweet and gluggy to enjoy. Generally, we found the prices to be quite reasonable and it was nice to have that memorable interaction with one of the staff who was so kind and helpful!
If this post helped you in some way and you’d like to buy me a coffee, I’d be incredibly grateful (:
